Banking Circle webinar reveals ‘water cooler’ moments are vital in the current ‘lock-down’ work environment

A Banking Circle webinar hosted by The Paypers brought together industry experts to share their experiences of how payments businesses are adapting in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.

The webinar revealed that businesses of all sizes have introduced virtual catchups and team meetings; even virtual trips to the bar on Friday evenings. The aim across the board is to help employees remain engaged and positive, and to mitigate the potential emotional and mental impact lockdown can have, whether employees live alone or with families.

Ryan O’Kane, Head of Data Solutions at Global Payments shared the importance of not just work-based discussions and catch-ups, but also allowing room for small talk as you would if you saw someone face-to-face in the office each day.

Miriam Wohlfarth, Founder & MD of Ratepay confirmed that as well as encouraging regular virtual meetups over coffee and lunch, she and other business leaders are now running weekly update Q&As with employees in which they share details of what is happening within the business. The aim is to be transparent, to help ensure the team feels safe and secure in these uncertain times.

As well as providing additional personal support for colleagues, the webinar also focused on the changes being experienced across the industry and how it is serving its customers. It was agreed that newer entrants are well-placed to adapt quickly to the new environment, and that doing so will be vital to their survival. In addition, the companies that bring in new solutions that add significant value and help customers navigate the current landscape will see huge benefits which outlast the pandemic.

Søren Mogensen, Chief Growth Officer at Banking Circle, concluded that he is not dreaming of getting back to the ‘good old normal’, but instead is focusing on adapting to this current and ‘new normal’, and how the lessons we are learning and situations we face now can benefit us and the industry in the long-term.
